Using cable internet and UANET's VPN setup is recommended.
If the University is a local phone call:
(this next paragraph may be out of date and/or completely inappropriate)
If you do not already have Internet access at home you can get it free
as a student or faculty member from the University. You
will need to obtain a UANet ID from Information Technology Services.
Also available is information for
home access explaining
how to setup the dial-up software for Windows. You should also investigate how to set up a new
connection on your computer by clicking on the Control Panel, then on the Network and Dial-up
Connection icon, and starting the wizard to help you create a new connection.
Once you have successfully
connected to the University or have your network details worked out some other way, you can use Putty (or some other ssh client) to connect to our
UNIX machines, and SCP to transfer files. Telnet is not available for
security reasons. Please see our Putty How-To Page and our SSH/SCP intro page
for
more information on using these tools.
List of remotely available CS Unix Machines:
----Linux machines----
- berry.cs.uakron.edu
- knuth.cs.uakron.edu
- wirth.cs.uakron.edu
You can slogin, ssh or scp to these machines from anywhere in the world.
Windows remote access:
We are planning remote access windows machines accessible only from on campus or VPN connections. The names will be of the form winremoteX.cs.uakron.edu where X will be from 1 to at least 8 (full example: winremote1.cs.uakron.edu). You would use the mstsc program under windows (remote desktop connection off the communications menu) or a linux or mac equivalent (tsclient is one suggestion, but it doesn't seem to work 100% correctly).
